How to Be the Best Answer in AI Search

SEO is changing fast. You may have also noticed that your experience as a Google user is changing, too.

For example, I recently searched for “What is the best coffee shop in Indianapolis?”

Firstly, even the way I searched for that is different. In the past, I may have searched for “coffee shops.” But now, I know that Google is going to give me a more personalized, specific response. See below what my search query yielded:

As a user, this is great and convenient! I now have a quick three coffee shops that I want to visit. And I didn’t even have to click.

But if I am an owner of a coffee shop, I’d want to be appearing in this AI overview to get in front of all my potential customers.

But, how exactly can I rank in AI overviews and AI chatbots?

Google’s new AI Mode means old ranking tricks (such as titles & metas, exact match keywords, and broad content) are not enough.

We’re here to give you everything you need to know so that you can change your SEO strategy effectively.

What’s Changing for SEO

Keywords still matter, but they are not enough. Google’s AI looks for the best answer. It doesn’t just match exact words. It checks if your content actually helps people.

For example, if you run a store selling home office furniture, you need more than product pages. You need a full guide on setting up a home office. Include tips, price comparisons, and answers to common questions. Cover the topic like you’re helping a friend.

Your site must be clear too. Use headers, bullet points, and schema markup. This helps Google understand your content. When AI scans your site, it should find clear, helpful sections.

As mentioned earlier, I didn’t even click on any website to find the answer I was looking for (best coffee shops). So, old metrics are not enough now. Google does not show clicks from AI answers in Analytics.

So, how can you measure SEO success? Check if your overall traffic grows. Look at how long people stay on your pages. Check if you get featured snippets. Watch how people move through your site (We love to use Microsoft Clarity!). If you need some guidance in understanding your data, check out our Dashboard 101 resource.

What to Do Now To Stay On Top of SEO

The good news is, if you are writing strong content, you are on the right track. But it’s time to double down. Here are a few of our tips that we are helping our clients with:

  • Create FAQs across your pages.
  • Build pillar pages that cover big topics fully
  • Refresh old pages so they stay useful
  • Follow E-E-A-T when writing content
  • Use clear headings (One H1, clear H2s and H3s)
  • Add images, charts, or examples to explain things better
  • Show real-life examples
  • Add customer stories and testimonials

To be the source AI picks, your website has to be helpful and trustworthy.

Don’t focus only on exact-match keywords. Think about questions people ask. Use tools to find related searches. Then answer those questions in your content.

3 Quick Wins You Can Do Today

Many of the items in my bulleted list above are bigger, long-term projects (such as building pillar pages and updating old pages). I want you to be able to walk away with three actionable tasks that you can do today.

Here’s where you should spend a quick couple of hours to make a big impact:

1. Add or Update an FAQ

Pick one of your most visited pages. Add 2–3 common questions and short answers. If you have time, add FAQ schema (it’s often just a simple plugin or copy-paste if you use WordPress). This tiny step can help your page show up in featured snippets and AI answers.

2. Check Your Headings

Open one key page. Make sure your H1, H2, and H3 headings are clear and break up content naturally. Add missing subheadings if needed. Not sure how to check? We love to use SEO Quake

AI tools read structure first, and clear headers help it understand your page.

3. Update One Stat or Example

Take an old blog or service page. Add one fresh stat, quote, or real-life example that’s from this year. AI loves current, relevant info. Even one updated section shows you keep your site alive and useful.

Keeping Up With SEO

Talk to your team. Make sure they know rankings alone don’t tell the whole story. Share what you learn about AI Mode. Help them see why it matters.

Try AI writing tools to speed up idea generation, but keep a human touch when writing. Readers want answers that feel real and personal. Add your voice. Add details a robot can’t.

SEO is not dead, i’s growing up. Google’s AI rewards websites that help people. That’s good news if you focus on quality.
